Empire State Games 2003 Buffalo July 23- 27, 2003 Rifle Team:
This year the Empire State Games took shooting out of its sports line up, and put it back in again, only a few weeks before the scheduled dates. Many shooters wrote to senators and assemblymen to help get shooting back in. Everyone at the Galway Junior Rifle Club is thankful for their efforts. Due to the shortened preparation time, many things were not organized completely. The state did not provide any of the usual luxuries that the competitors get. Shooters did not receive housing, meals, transportation, uniforms, security and other things. With a very high increase on the money-spending of the shooter some were unable to attend, but many competitors still came and competed as normal. Fortunately all of the Galway Juniors scheduled to go to the "Festival", changed their schedules and went to the Games. The "Shooting Festival" was created by Mr. Meyers as a replacement for the Games. But when the Games reinstated shooting, the festival was cancelled. The shooting venues were excellent this year: Elma Conservation Club: Elma, NY All the smallbore rifle events were held here. A very nicely kept covered range, and clubhouse, complete with a great pond for fishing and a pheasant farm nearby. Allied Sportsmen's Club: In Morilla, NY, only 8 miles from the Elma Conservation Club. The Air Rifle and Running Target events were held here, on a well kept range, complete with ping pong tables and a full bar. All other shooting events were held in different location, most were north of the Buffalo City.
