Empire State Games 2002

The Empire State Games started on August 16, 1978 with 4, 500 members entered to compete. The first games then commenced at Syracuse University with the lighting of the Empire State Games torch. Ever since it has been one of New York's greatest traditions.

In the present day 1/2 a million athletes compete across the nation in more than 40 states. The nationally acclaimed amateur sports movement in the U.S. started right here in the great state of New York.

New York becomes divided into 6 regions for the Empire State Games. The regions are:

Adirondack        Hudson Valley
Long Island        New York City
Central            Western

The Galway Junior Rifle Team competes as a part of the Adirondack region.

The location of the games also rotates yearly.
